Our Vision

Students leaving school prepared for their economic roles as workers, consumers, citizens, and lifelong decision makers in a globally interdependent world.

Our Mission

To help teachers teach those students in the public and independent schools of Georgia.

Helping teachers teach economics

Thank you for visiting the Georgia Council on Economic Education's Web site.  We're working hard to be the resource of choice for K-12 social studies and economics teachers across the Peach State.  Here you can review programs, register for workshops, order teaching materials, or connect to GCEE's ECONBLOG.

Get to workshops

The spring schedule of workshops is filling fast.  With 44 workshops this spring, there's a lot to choose from for Georgia's K-12 economics and social studies teachers.  New for this year is Using Biographies of Great Americans to Teach Economics, a workshop for elementary school teachers where basic elementary concepts identified in the Georgia Performance Standards are presented through the lives of great figures in American history.  You can see the list of spring workshops here.

Twice as nice: a one-two Stock Market Game finish for South Central Middle School in Bartow County

Two of Jason Kornegay's teams at South Central Middle School in Bartow County have finished first and second statewide in the fall 2011 Stock Market Game.  The team of Dustin McClure, Steven Munive, Peyton Spencer, and Kayla Tipton won first place statewide with a portfolio value of $214,477.  Another South Central team of Diaza Lewis, Alexis Posey, and Rebecca Sullivan finished second statewide with a portfolio value of $207,428.  These are the first statewide winning teams for the Bartow County middle school and Jason Kornegay, a seventh-grade social studies teacher at South Central.  In third place statewide was one of Mark Leviton's teams at Parkview High School in Gwinnett with a portfolio value of $196,898.  GCEE is working to confirm the roughly 100 other winners for each school system and independent school region.  All statewide and local winning teams will be invited to the annual Stock Market Game Awards Luncheon in Atlanta in May.  Congratulations to South Central Middle School!

GCEE presents Georgia School Superintendent with research study

GCEE Executive Director Dr. David Martin presented State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge with a research report during a mid-October meeting that shows students whose teachers take a GCEE workshop do better on the state-mandated economics End of Course Test (EOCT) than students of teachers without the in-service training.  Led by Dr. John Swinton, Director of the Center for Economic Education at Georgia College and State University, a team of researchers examined approximately 180,000 test scores over three years, measuring the impact of GCEE programming in terms of changes in student test scores on the EOCT.  The researchers found that students of teachers who attended GCEE workshops performed significantly higher statistically on the EOCT than students whose teachers had never attended a GCEE workshop.  Researchers also found that the more workshops teachers attended, the better their students performed on the EOCT.  Click here to read the report.

Virtual Economics 4: VE3 and a little more

If you have already attended GCEE's Virtual Economics 3, you won't need to register for a VE4 workshop.  That's because GCEE is including a 30-minute lesson on VE4 with every workshop offered this fall, except Stock Market Game workshops.  The VE4 "refresher" includes a copy of the new VE4 CD-ROM for all teachers who have attended a Virtual Economics 3 workshop.  VE4 has several new features and upgrades that teachers can learn about quickly, so a one-day workshop isn't necessary for those teachers who have already attended a VE3 workshop.  For more information, please contact Glen Blankenship or Mike Raymer to learn more.

Is your district in the network?  EconomicsAmerica in Georgia

The EconomicsAmerica network in Georgia now stands at 162 schools and school systems, with 129 public school systems and 33 independent schools participating.  To strengthen the teaching of economics, EconomicsAmerica makes resources available, like:

  • In-service Workshops.  GCEE can bring in-service workshops in K-12 economics content correlated to the GPS to an EconomicsAmerica school or school system interested in training teachers on site.
  • Substitute reimbursement.  While teachers are in GCEE workshops, reimbursement is available for substitute teachers so classroom teachers can attend.
  • No charge.  Many GCEE workshops are offered at no charge with materials included- but they can fill up fast!  Teachers in EconomicsAmerica schools systems receive priority when registering for teacher training workshops.

Schools and school systems in Georgia are increasingly making use of EconomicsAmerica.  For a complete listing of current EconomicsAmerica school systems and independent schools, click here.  To learn more about EconomicsAmerica, click here, or contact GCEE Associate Director Glen Blankenship or Program Manager Mike Raymer to get started.
