II. Description of Program :

Maximum of 1,200 words or (five typed, double-spaced, 8 1/2" x 11" pages). The description of the program should emphasize how it meets the criteria for teacher, curriculum, students, and creativity.

A. The Teacher
An exemplary economics program should involve teachers who exhibit the following expertise:

        -scholarship and expertise in the curriculum they teach

        -participation in all aspects of the development of this curriculum

        -sound instructional theory and practice in the implementation of the program.

B. The Curriculum
An exemplary economics program should include curriculum that will demonstrate the following:

        -is guided by clearly stated goals and objectives

        -is based on sound scholarship from the content of economics

        -relates appropriately to the age, maturity, interests and needs of the students

        -incorporates effective instructional strategies and techniques that engage students in the learning process

        -sets high expectations for students and uses a variety of systematic measures to evaluate student performance.

C. The Students
An exemplary economics program should engage students in the following ways:

        -the critical examination of significant content, issues, and events from a variety of perspectives

        -focused comprehensive decision making and active participation in the school, community and world

        -understanding democratic principles and participation in the democratic process as they affect the economic system.

D. Creativity

III. Supporting Documents:

May include the following, but should not exceed 10 pages:-

                     -letter of support from principal and/or supervisor

        -letter of support from the individual responsible for coordinating the economics curriculum and program; this letter should verify that the program is currently being implemented

                     -letter from a third educator

        -letter from student, parent, or community individual or organization 

        -other appropriate support documents including samples of work, newspaper articles, etc.

               

Letters should include a statement verifying that the writer has reviewed the GCEE Program of Excellence description and criteria and that the program being nominated exemplifies the criteria.

Programs identified as finalists by the Selection Committee will be required to host the two-member Selection Committee for a one-day, on-site visit.
