The William J. VanLandingham Commitment to Education Award
This award was created in 1993 to recognize the long-time commitment of Bill VanLandingham (1937-1993) to education in general and to the Georgia Council on Economic Education in particular. He played an instrumental role in the evolution of the Georgia Council, which combined two things he loved: business and education. Criteria include a long-term commitment to education in a variety of settings. VanLandingham joined the Council’s board and executive committee in 1978 and chaired the nominating committee beginning in 1983. He became the Council’s first vice chair in 1986 and served as chair from 1988 to 1990. He co-chaired the council’s 1989-1991 support campaign. He was a director of the Georgia Tech Foundation and the Joint Tech-Georgia Development Fund; a member of the Emory University board of visitors; a member of the Atlanta Board of Education; and a chair of the Pace Academy Board of Trustees. Selection Process Nominations for the Van Landingham Award are accepted following an announcement in the Georgia Council on Economic Education's newsletter, The Word on Economic Education. An annual call for nominations is also sent to GCEE's Board of Trustees. Once received, nominations are screened by the Communications Committee. The Communications Committee then presents their nominations to GCEE's Executive Committee. The award is not presented in the absence of a suitable nominee. |
