Introduction and Background        < top >

Economic understanding is fundamental to a democratic society in which individuals daily make decisions as citizens, wage earners and consumers. The Georgia Council on Economic Education believes that economic understanding is as necessary for the students of Georgia as the ability to read, write and compute and is committed to the support of teacher education that will ensure each child in Georgia’s public and independent schools have the opportunity to learn the principles of economics in a free society. Georgia has recognized the importance of economics by including it in the state’s Georgia Performance Standards and national and statewide tests.

EconomicsAmerica provides a process by which educators can effectively integrate economics into their curricula. Participation entails commitment by schools to use quality economic education materials at relevant points in the curricula, to support their teachers’ participation in teacher training programs, and to implement evaluation programs.
