Congratulations to Nancy Romeo of Johns Creek Elementary school in Forsyth County for being the 3,000th teacher we’ve served in 2020! John Morton Award Winner!

Congratulations to Joel Miller of South Forsyth High School for recently being awarded the Council for Economic Education’s “John Morton Excellence in the Teaching of Economics Award.” This prestigious award honors teachers of any subject who use exemplary teaching techniques that improve their students’ economic understanding, in and out of the classroom. InvestWrite Champs

Special tip of the GCEE hat to students from Space, Time, Community Homeschool, North Hall Middle, and Decatur High for taking home top honors in Georgia’s spring-2020 InvestWrite competition.

InvestWrite is an innovative national writing competition offered exclusively to teachers and students participating in The Stock Market Game each semester. The program adds a critical thinking component to help reinforce concepts learned in the classroom and helps students gain a deeper understanding of the market.

YTD Update

YTD Numbers

As we prepare to kick off a new season of workshop delivery, it’s worth pausing to reflect on what GCEE has accomplished this year. As of 7/31/20 we’ve served 2,615 K-12 teachers from 116 of Georgia’s public school systems. We’ve also hosted multiple competitions for more than 350 students and had 14,985 elementary, middle, and high school participants play our spring Stock Market Game. We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished so far this year and are looking forward to serving many more teachers in the coming months.

A Candid Talk With Andre Dickens

2020 Update

It’s been quite a year to be serving teachers considering everything that’s happened in the last few months. From school closures to the sudden shift to virtual learning, 2020 has been a year like none other. One constant during the recent tumult is GCEE’s dedication to helping teachers teach economics and personal finance. Since March 25th we’ve served 1,197 K-12 teachers through a series of virtual workshops designed to help them shift to virtual learning environments.

Center Director of the Year

Congratulations to University of West Georgia Center for Economic Education & Financial Literacy Director Kim Holder for being named the Georgia Council’s 2020 Center Director of the Year. Kim is a tireless advocate for K-12 teachers in her region and regularly promotes professional development opportunities designed to help teachers teach economics and financial literacy. Kim also connects teachers and business leaders in her community in order to help students learn more about future occupations and meaningful work pathways.

GCEE was honored to recently spend an hour with USWNT star Kelley O’Hara talking about life as a professional soccer player, pay equality, the collective bargaining process, building endorsement partnerships and being part of the greatest team in the world. 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award

GCEE is proud to recognize Dr. David Martin as the 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award winner. From time to time, there are Georgians who have made such outstanding contributions throughout their lives to advance economic and personal finance education in our state that the Georgia Council on Economic Education believes they are truly deserving of special recognition.  David Martin is perhaps the person most deserving of this award.  In addition to leading the Georgia Council for 35 years, David has been recognized nationwide as a leader and someone who literally spent his entire professional career promoting economic and personal finance education.  Thank you David Martin and congratulations!

2020 Program of Excellence Award

The Savannah-Chatham County Public School System (SCCPSS) has been selected as the 2020 Program of Excellence by the Georgia Council.  This award is periodically given to an organization, school, or school system that has demonstrated excellence in economic education by offering transformative experiences for students and teachers.  SCCPSS is a state leader in economic professional development for its educators hosting more than 30 economics workshops for over 450 teachers in the last three years.  Additionally, SCCPSS has fielded several Teacher of the Year finalists, helped facilitate student and teacher study tours to Japan, and hosted GCEE for many other special events and learning opportunities.  Thank you Savannah-Chatham County Public School System and congratulations!

GCEE is proud to recognize Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB) as the recipient of the 2020 William J. The Canada-U.S. Trade Relationship

GCEE was honored to be joined by Nadia Theodore (Consul General of Canada in Atlanta) for a fantastic webinar today. 48 middle and high school educators had the opportunity to hear the Consul General speak on a range of topics including the U.S./Canada trade partnership, the duties of a Consul General, the recently ratified USMCA trade agreement, and the Canadian response to the COVID-19 crisis.

Spring SMG Winner Crowned

Congratulations to the team of students from the Atlanta International School for taking home 1st place in the spring, 2020 Stock Market Game. Amazingly, they turned an initial $100,000 investment portfolio into a final total of $253,986 during the ten-week competition. Hats off to the more than 20,000 students and teachers who participated this spring!

Virtual Learning

GCEE delivered its very first “Virtual Learning” webinar on March 25th to an engaged group of 68 teachers from across the state. The focus of the meeting was the recent fiscal and monetary policy actions taken by the federal government and Federal Reserve Bank . Teachers received numerous teaching tips, strategies and web links that will help them reach their students during these interesting times. GCEE plans to offer at least two webinars per week through the end of the school year.

Personal Finance Challenge Champs

A team of students from Jackson County High took home 1st place in the 2020 Georgia Personal Finance Challenge and will now have the opportunity to compete in the national finals in Lincoln, Nebraska in May. Runners up in the competition were teams from the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology and Campbell High School. Teams were given financial information related to a fictional family and had to create a plan that would help this family become more financially sound.

338 and 1,753. By now you know what those numbers represent. GCEE served 338 K-12 teachers during the month of February and we drove 1,753 miles to do it.  Not bad for the shortest month of the year.

GCEE at NAEE

Members of the GCEE team and Center Directors from Georgia State, Georgia Southern, and the University of Georgia joined a group of educators from around the country at the 2020 National Association of Economic Educators (NAEE) Conference in Jacksonville, Florida last week. The Georgia Council was awarded two NAEE Curriculum Awards and Associate Director Chris Cannon took home the 2020 NAEE Rising Star Award. University of West Georgia Center Director Kim Holder was honored with the 2020 NAEE Technology Award.

Atlanta Econ Games

Super huge GCEE congratulations to teams from Springdale Park Elementary (5th grade) and the Main Street Academy (4th grade)! They took home the top prizes in the 2020 Atlanta Econ Games hosted by our friends at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta on February 21st. Springdale Park and Main Street Academy topped teams from Atlanta City and Fulton County school systems in an exciting competition that focused on entrepreneurship, teamwork, and the 4th and 5th grade econ standards.

A Day at Blackhall Studios

If you’re going to deliver a workshop focusing on Georgia’s booming film industry why not do it at one of the largest movie studio’s in the state? Hats off to everyone at Blackhall Studios for being such great hosts to a terrific group of teachers that trekked from far and wide to attend. Amazing guest speakers, terrific industry insight and a tour of multiple sound stages all made for a wonderful day of learning.

Behind the Scenes at GPB

A group of high school teachers spent the day at GPB learning more about the rapidly changing media landscape, GPB’s funding model, their educational programming initiatives and the impact the film industry continues to have on GPB’s ability to rent studio space on a regular basis. The teachers were also given the opportunity to tour some of GPB’s television and radio studios.

Martha Rush in the House!

Teaching legend Martha Rush came all the way to Atlanta to deliver two outstanding workshops to a number of lucky high school econ teachers from throughout the metro area. Ms. Rush, a nationally recognized teacher and author, shared many of her most successful teaching strategies, lessons and classroom tips during two workshops she presented for GCEE.  Special thanks to our friends at the Atlanta Fed for hosting the first of the two workshops.

Year in Review

What a year it’s been! We delivered 150 workshops to 2,611 K-12 teachers, we rolled out a brand new website, we hired a new Program Manager, we created multiple new workshops, we drove more than 17,000 miles to serve teachers in 104 of Georgia’s 181 public school systems…and we did about 14 million other fun/interesting/effective things to help teachers teach economics and personal finance in the public and independent schools of Georgia.

A New Workshop is Born

GCEE recently convened an all-star group of middle/high school teachers, a college professor and an education specialist from the Atlanta Fed to begin work on a new 6th & 7th grade econ workshop that will be rolled out in March, 2020. The new workshop, which will focus on standard of living, international trade, trade barriers, and economic systems, will be made available to any/all 6th & 7th grade teachers throughout Georgia in the coming months.

This group of students finished the game with an impressive portfolio total of $135,873! Abbejean Kehler Technology Award

Congratulations to University of West Georgia Center for Economic Education Director Kim Holder for recently being awarded the Abbejean Kehler Technology Award by the National Association of Economic Educators (NAEE).

GCEE Goes to Japan

CEE Associate Director Chris Cannon is in Japan for the week with a group of high school students from Islands High, Milton High, Roswell High and Sumter County High as part of a Japan-America Society of Georgia/Gen-J/Japan Foundation study tour. While in Japan, the group will be visiting schools, businesses and cultural locations to experience what the country has to offer and to learn more about what life is like for Japanese citizens of all ages.

A Rising Star Among Us

Proud moment for the GCEE team as Associate Director Chris Cannon was just named the 2019 National Association of Economic Educators (NAEE) “Rising Star Award” winner. This highly prestigious award is given each year to an individual who has been a member of the NAEE network for seven years or less. The purpose of the award is to identify someone who has “hit the ground running” and made extraordinary contributions to economic education programs or services early in his or her career in economic education. Wells Fargo Night in Atlanta

The Georgia Council partnered with our friends at Wells Fargo to conduct a “Family Financial Fun Night” at the Barack and Michelle Academy in Atlanta on Tuesday evening. Students and their family members learned about saving, budgeting and banking through a series of interactive activities and simulations. They also walked away with new skills that will help them make informed financial decisions in the future. Thank you to all of the wonderful Wells Fargo volunteers who helped make the evening a success.

GCEE Visits MAGNA

GCEE and the Center for Economic Education at the University of West Georgia brought a group of teachers to Magna Industries in Carrollton, GA on November 18th to learn more about MAGNA’s manufacturing processes, strategies and business successes. Teachers got to see how MAGNA uses innovative strategies to produce millions of auto parts that end up on BMW, Chrysler, EZ GO, Hyundai, KIA, and Nissan vehicles sold all over North America.

Econ Games Comes to Henry County

More than 100 4th and 5th grade Henry County students participated in GCEE’s ECON GAMES competition on Friday, November 15th. Students competed in three rounds of competition that focused on entrepreneurship, economics, and personal finance. The final round saw students “pitching” business plan ideas (Shark Tank style) to groups of judges who ultimately determined the winners.

A Day at the Georgia Poultry Lab

GCEE took a group of middle and high school teachers to the Georgia Poultry Lab in Gainesville to learn more about the poultry industry’s impact on Georgia’s economy. A few key takeaways…the poultry industry makes up 50% of Georgia’s overall agriculture sector, Georgia leads the nation in broiler production, Georgia poultry farmers produce 31 million pounds of chicken and more than seven million table eggs on an average day! Thank you to all of our friends at the Georgia Poultry Lab for the amazing hospitality.

The National Association of Economic Educators recently recognized GCEE with a gold medal for our “Lights, Camera, Budget!” online game and a bronze medal for our “The Atlanta Braves Move to Cobb County”  lesson plan series. The annual awards recognize superior curricular resources that are based on a thorough examination by a committee of experts in subject matter and curriculum design.

A Day at the UPS SMART Hub

GCEE took a group of econ teachers to the UPS SMART Hub for a tour of one of the most technologically advanced sorting facilities in the world. The teachers learned that more than 100,000 packages are processed every hour in the 1.2 million square feet facility located on Fulton Industrial Blvd. They also learned about employment opportunities at UPS, the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability, and its energy saving practices that are cornerstones to their approach to business.

GCEE was honored to team up with friends from Wells Fargo to deliver a Family Financial Fun Night at Houston County’s Russell Elementary School last evening. Students and parents came out to learn more bout financial literacy and to experience interactive activities designed to help them make sound decisions related to personal finance and financial planning.

Distinguished Speaker in Savannah

Chief United States Bankruptcy Judge for the Southern District of Georgia Edward Coleman, and a team of Savannah-area lawyers, spent an evening with a group of distinguished Chatham County economics/personal finance teachers to discuss bankruptcy laws and the importance of learning personal finance basics at a young age. Judge Coleman and his colleagues explained the history of bankruptcy, the most common reasons why people file, how bankruptcy typically works, and numerous tips for avoiding the process altogether.

GCEE @ GCSS

The GCEE team was busy during last week’s Georgia Council for the Social Studies (GCSS) conference at the Classic Center in Athens, GA. Associate Director Chris Cannon delivered an informative session on the new “Financial Fitness for Life” publication while Program Director Angie Battle led a session on GCEE’s “Economics in Children’s Literature” workshops. Thank you to the hundreds of K-12 educators who stopped by the GCEE booth to say hello and to everyone on the GCSS Board for coordinating another great conference.

GCEE in L.A.

Georgia was well represented at the Council for Economic Education’s Financial Literacy and Economic Education Conference in Los Angeles, CA last week.  GCEE staff was joined by four outstanding high school teachers, two Center Directors, and an Atlanta Fed education specialist. Members of this group presented sessions on the economy of Cuba, investing in human capital, fiscal responsibility, and project-based learning.

Stock Market Game

The 2019 Fall Stock Market Game kicks off today with more than 4,000 student teams from around the state participating in the ten-week online simulation. Students are given a hypothetical $100,000 to invest in the global capital markets and attempt to build a portfolio that increases this amount. At the end of the 10 weeks, teams with the highest total equity are eligible for a variety of prizes and awards.

Middle School Financial Lit Takes Flight

Teachers in Savannah were the first to experience the Georgia Council’s new Financial Literacy for Middle Grades workshop this week   This workshop delivers content and new lesson plans written by Georgia teachers designed to engage middle school students and help them understand personal financial literacy from a variety of angles. The Georgia Council will be delivering this workshop far and wide in the coming months.

Economics in Children’s Literature: Grades 4 and 5 Kicks Off

The Georgia Council debuted its newest workshop in front of a group of Henry County teachers earlier this week. Economics in Children’s Literature: Grades 4 and 5 uses four unique children’s books to help fourth and fifth grade teachers incorporate effective literacy strategies into creative and engaging STEM, language arts, and social studies lessons. All four books are provided to teachers along with the lessons that are demonstrated at the workshop. Thank you to the Zeist Foundation for making this exciting workshop possible!

What a Difference a Day Makes

The Georgia Council was recently presented with a generous donation from Regions Bank for winning the recent “What A Difference A Day Makes” online competition.  Thousands of teachers, students, and supporters of GCEE voted in the competition to see which non-profit organization would get a generous financial donation along with a day of volunteer services from a Regions representative.

Georgia Pacific Sponsors Economic Education Institute

Twenty-five teachers from across the country were treated to a week-long Economic Education Institute co-produced by GCEE and Georgia Pacific in June.  The experience included lesson demonstrations from the Council and Youth Entrepreneurs, guest speakers from Georgia Pacific, and field experiences to High Road Ice Cream, Mercedes Benz Stadium, The Battery Atlanta, Chick Fil A headquarters, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta.

2019 Manufacturing Tour Heads East

GCEE’s summer manufacturing bus tours have developed a good reputation over the last four years for providing top of the line experiences for teachers and access to facilities around the state of Georgia.  The 2019 tour was no exception as teachers were treated to exceptional tours of Toto Toilets, Great Southern Wood (Yellawood), Savannah River Brewing, Textron’s RPM facility, and Cardinal Health.
